In The News

Drinking water is important for many different aspects of your health. Your body is at least 60 percent water, and your brain and lungs are closer to 75 percent. Just 1 percent dehydration can lead to reduced cognitive skills and kidney function.

Now, researchers at the University of Illinois have also been able to quantify the amount of water you should drink each day to help reduce the number of calories you eat and, hence, increase the number of pounds you lose.

Drinking between one and three more cups of water each day can reduce the number of calories you eat between 68 and over 200 calories per day. The impact of water on consumption was the same across race, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic status.

Daily Health Tip

You’ve been told since you were young to drink 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water each day to stay hydrated. And, while it’s a great rule of thumb, the color of your urine is a better indicator of how well hydrated you are.

Your urine should be light yellow or light straw colored, indicating you are well hydrated.

Making Changes

You might not even know how much water you drink a day now, so your first step would be to start counting those cups. The easiest way to do this is to fill a large container with water, from which you fill your water glass each day.

Make a concerted effort to keep your urine light yellow in color, but not colorless because then you’ve had a bit too much to drink. Many times, just the act of paying attention to how much you’re drinking will help you to take an extra one to three cups of water a day.

If you find you’re still a bit dehydrated, then it’s time to set a goal for how many containers of water you’ll drink a day. Getting up to use the bathroom is one way to get out of your chair every couple of hours and stretch your legs. The healthiest thing you can do is to get up every 15 minutes and move around, but using the facilities every 15 minutes would mean you’re drinking too much water!
