Participants in this study underwent nine weekly sessions of acupuncture and experience relief from their chronic pain. They also experienced functional capacity and quality of life in the same participants. The researchers also found that the participants continued to experience the same benefits one year later.
The evidence from this study suggests that 90 percent of people who have fibromyalgia may benefit from a form of complementary therapy, including massage, acupuncture, acupressure and hydrotherapy. However, in the past, most of the recommendations were based on global recommendations and not those that were personalized and tailored to the individual’s needs.
Side effects from acupuncture were mild and very few. According to the researchers the treatment “produced an improvement in the participant's' condition, reflected by a reduction in pain intensity and enhanced functional capacity and quality of life after the intervention and during the follow up period, Such an outcome has not been reported by previous studies following the application of standardised treatments: therefore, our results suggest that applying individualised treatment algorithms when starting a course of acupuncture may be important,"

Fibromyalgia is a chronic, widespread muscular pain that is associated with fatigue, depression, and poor sleep patterns. Unfortunately, it affects up to one in 20 people in the United States. It’s important to talk with your doctor about your treatments before you integrate new ones. Although most complementary therapies work well with traditional medicine, not all do.
Before incorporating acupuncture treatments into your regimen, check with your physician and get a referral from a friend or family member who is using a reliable practitioner.
If you don’t know anyone using a practitioner, try to get a referral from a friend of a friend. Check out their credentials and their malpractice. The needles must be sterile in order to prevent the spread of disease and infection.
You might also try acupressure to help alleviate the chronic pain of fibromyalgia. This is a practice that uses only external pressure on the same points on the body used by acupuncture.
