According to Science Daily, “Depression has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and other physical ailments, and depression is commonly associated with worse outcomes for patients with heart disease and other conditions. In addition, as many as 20 percent of people hospitalized with a heart attack report symptoms of depression, while patients with heart disease have three times the risk of developing depression compared to the general population.”
Researchers from Emory Hospital wanted to learn more about the relationship and studied 965 patients who were free of heart disease and depression. Using questionnaires they looked for indicators of depression and early signs of heart disease.
They found that arterial stiffening and inflammation which accompany early signs of depression, were more prevalent in individuals who were inactive rather than active. The research demonstrated the positive effects that exercise has on depression and cardiovascular disease.

The cost of depression and cardiovascular disease is significant on the workplace, for employers and financially. Using exercise daily can reduce your risk factors and improve your overall performance at home and at work.
1. Exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. Pick something you enjoy and stick with it. You can change what you do each day. The idea is to do something that increases your heart rate for 30 minutes.
2. Don’t stay seated for 8 hours all day. When you do, it eliminates the benefits of exercising at other times during the day. Your body was designed to be up and moving all day. When you are moving you’ll reduce your potential for disease and illness.
3. Eat a well-balanced diet full of healthy fats and proteins. Eliminate or significantly reduce sugars and grains. Keep your carbs to less than 100 grams per day. Carbohydrates are metabolized into sugar in your body. Sugar damages your immune system, increases your triglycerides and increases the inflammatory response in your body.
4. Stop smoking and reduce your alcohol intake. Both of these will increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.
