FACT OR FICTION: The changes in your health - are they related to your genetics or your lifestyle choices?

In The News

Researchers from the American Osteopathic Association, the organization that graduates physicians as doctors of osteopathy, has released data demonstrating that exercising in groups improves mental, physical and emotional quality of life measurements over and above exercising individually.

People who worked out together, exercised twice as long as those exercising alone. The participants in the study were able to self-select either working out alone or in a group. At the end of 12 weeks the individuals who worked out in groups rated greater improvements in their mental, physical and emotional health and they reported a greater reduction in stress levels.

Daily Health Tip

Exercise is foundational to optimal health. Whether you walk after meals, get on your stationary bike or enjoy going to the gym daily - this habit is critical to attaining and maintaining good health.

Making Changes

Finding a group with whom to exercise is not difficult. However, it may require that you step out of your comfort zone.  Here are a couple suggestions:

  1. Your local gym will have exercise groups in aerobics, biking, swimming and numerous other options.
  2. Martial arts is usually done in a group setting.
  3. Join a group already in progress. Find local groups in your area using websites like MeetUp.com. Talk with your local running shop for walking and running groups or your local bike shop for biking groups.
  4. Start your own group in your neighborhood or community. Put up signs and personally invite others to attend.
  5. Put together a group around a particular interest - such as taking the kids for a walk each day or walking your dogs together.

Daily Affirmation

I take time to relax after a stressful day at work.
I give my mind and body a chance to recharge after work. I focus on relaxation and rejuvenation after a challenging day to recover from the stress. I free my mind, let go of the day's struggles, and reflect on my dreams and goals.

Fact or Fiction?

Although there is some genetic differences in health, most is due to your physical and social environment and the influence on your opportunities and health behavior.  Environment and choices have a significant impact on healthcare, health behaviors and choices. Each of those choices has something to do with how you age and your health as you mature.

Have a wonderful day!
