In research from the University of Birmingham, scientists found that drinking 500 ml (16 ounces) of water half an hour before your meals could help individuals who are obese to lose weight. Participants in the study were monitored over a 12 week period and given a weight management consultation. 41 were asked to drink the water before their main meals and 43 were asked to imagine they had a full stomach before eating.

Those who drank the water lost an average of 2.87 pounds more than those in the control group. If the individuals drank the water before all three main meals they lost an average of 9.48 pounds over 12 weeks. Those who did it only once a day lost an average of 1.7 pounds over the same 12 week period.

The simplicity of this strategy is overwhelming. Drinking 16 ounces of fluid before each of your main meals and increasing your activity level can lead to losing weight at a moderate and healthy pace. The water used in the study was tap water. Sparkling water, soda or sweetened drinks were not allowed.

Losing a few pounds every 2 to 3 months adds up by the end of the year, and is definitely better than gaining the weight every 2 to 3 months.

Drinking enough water each day to stay hydrated has other benefits as well. It reduces your risk of constipation, helps your kidneys work more efficiently and makes your skin look more firm and younger.
