Sleep Apnea and CV Disease

ThurNov3CI.jpgIN YOUR DAILY DOSE today is news about an interesting symptom people with obstructive sleep apnea will experience. Untreated sleep apnea can result in high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease and disgruntled sleeping partners.

IN FACT OR FICTION you’ll discover a medication that you might use, which is also good for those cut flowers.

In The News

Sleep apnea is a condition that effects men and women of all ages. Unfortunately, the side effects of sleep apnea include obesity and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and liver disease. In a new study released from Alpert Medical School of Brown University, researchers found that there were additional symptoms which might identify post-menopausal women who suffer from sleep apnea.

About 2 percent of women suffer from obstructive sleep apnea but may go undiagnosed. Past research suggests that some women may understate the symptoms of poor sleep, leading to a diagnosis of insomnia or depression.

To determine whether nocturnal enuresis, previously identified in children with sleep apnea, might also be associated with post-menopausal women with sleep apnea, researchers studied more than 161,000 women.

In reviewing the results of the study they found that when women experienced more traditional risk factors of sleep apnea they had greater odds of also experiencing nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting.

Daily Health Tip

The researchers suggest that when screening for obstructive sleep apnea, physicians will want to include questions about bedwetting.

What you will want to identify are the possible symptoms of sleep apnea in order to get appropriate treatment. Without treatment your risk of other negative health issues increases significantly.

Loud snoring

Episodes of breathing stopping during sleep for short periods witnessed by another person

Abrupt awakening during the night accompanied by shortness of breath

Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat

Morning headaches

Difficulty staying awake during the day

Attention problems

Irritability

Excessive daytime sleepiness

Making Changes

Although not immediately life-threatening, sleep apnea significantly reduces your quality of life and will increase the potential for significant health conditions, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, liver problems and complications with other medications and surgery.

If you believe you are suffering from sleep apnea, the test is simple and the treatment even simpler. Pay attention to your sleep partner’s complaints or what others are telling you about your snoring. If you’re doing it, it’s time to address the issue and get it fixed.

You’ll be surprised by how much better you’ll feel and how much easier it will be to maintain a normal weight!

My Daily Affirmation

I am flexible with my routine but still work out consistently. I am proud of my accomplishments while I exercise. My confidence grows each time I work out.

Today, I recognize the power of my exercise routine. I am strong of mind and body and I owe it all to my exercise regimen.

Fact Or Fiction?

Did you know that a drug used on humans also has a significant effect on flowers?  Just 1 mg of this and your flowers stay fresher one week longer than expected!

Did you know that researchers from Israel and Australia found that 1 mg of Viagra, the drug used to treat impotence in men, would maintain flowers for 1 week beyond their natural time. The usual dose for men is 50 mg and the researchers found 1 mg enough to treat 2 vases of flowers. Other testing has been done on strawberries, roses, carnations and broccoli to extend their shelf life.

Have a wonderful day!
