In The News

Parents may struggle with developing a style of parenting that can help their children to grow into strong individuals. In research released from Melbourne Graduate School of Education, scientists discovered how children can learn to draw on their personal strengths to cope with the demands in life that lead to stress.

Stress is the common denominator in many different illnesses, including asthma, obesity, diabetes, headaches, depression and gastrointestinal problems. While some stress is debilitating or damaging, not all stress is bad. Positive stress is a normal part of the growing up process. By learning how to manage it well, your children can be helped to learn, grow and adapt to their environment.

The research has shined a light on how strength based parenting can help build up your child’s resources. This is an approach where parents deliberately cultivate a positive state in the relationship and qualities in their children.

The idea is to add a positive filter to the way that your child will react to stress and limit the likelihood of your child using avoidance or aggression to their coping strategies. This avenue of research has identified the importance of identifying and building strengths in your child.

Making Changes

Making the changes necessary to develop strong skills in any arena in life means you’ll have to change the way you think and the way you act. Making those changes can be challenging.  Here are some of the things you can start with.

1. Set your children up to succeed in a stressful situation. It can be in a situation of their choice or yours, but shouldn’t be something you alter. In other words, don’t let them win the checkers or chess game. Play the game with them and beat them fairly. Point out that they’ll feel great when they do beat you.

2.  Teach your children the difference between positive and negative stress. If you don’t know, then enroll in Transform Your Life at Healthy Life University. You can take the course together with your children.

3. Evaluate your own stress level in your life and commit to reducing it to a healthy level.

Fact Or Fiction?

Although 13 rows of kernels is possible, it isn’t likely in an ear of corn. The rows of kernels develop when the seeds double. If you cut through an ear of corn you can see the evidence in the development of the tail of each kernel. Having an odd number of rows - possible, not likely.
