FACT OR FICTION: Are toddlers dangerous?

In The News

Research has demonstrated people who eat a vegetarian diet not only lose weight more effectively than those eating a conventional low-calorie diet but they also improved their metabolism by reducing body fat.

When you lose muscle fat it also improves glucose metabolism, which is important for people with metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes. 74 people with type-2 diabetes either followed a conventional diabetic diet or a vegetarian diet. The people eating a vegetarian diet had twice the success rate of reducing body weight with a loss of 6.2 kg compared to 3.2 in people eating the conventional diet.

Daily Health Tip

Be sure you vegetarian diet isn’t also high in carbohydrates. Replace the protein from meat with healthy fat, such as avocado, coconut oil or raw nuts and seeds, which follows the diet used in the study that was high in vegetables, legumes, fruits and nuts.

Making Changes

What you eat affects the growth of bacteria in your gut that outnumbers the number of cells in your body. This bacteria is responsible for the strength of your immune system and impacts the inflammatory response in your body - which in turn affects your heart health, risk of stroke and potential for suffering immune mediated diseases, such as lupus.

You may make significant impact on your gut microbiome by making just a couple of changes to your diet. Researchers have discovered people eating a variety of vegetables have a more diverse microbiome (important to health). Sugar feeds the bad bacterial growth in your intestines.  Here are several strategies that may help you:

  1. Consider using a quality probiotic and prebiotic supplement - the first to add a diverse microbiome to your gut and the second to feed them.
  2. Reduce or eliminate your sugar intake, smoking and alcohol consumption as each negatively affects your gut bacteria, your immune system and your heart health.
  3. Increase the amount of non-carbohydrate fiber you eat daily as it feeds your good bacteria and found in vegetables.
  4. Reduce the amount of carbohydrates you eat each day as these foods metabolize into sugar in your body.

Feeding the hungry is an example of showing brotherly love. I understand the challenges that come with being without food. I join groups that prepare and deliver meals to those in need.

Fact or Fiction?

Toddlers are dangerous to other toddlers, but what about adults? In a meme circulating in 2015, there was some evidence that toddlers had killed or injured more than foreign terrorists on American soil.

On December 6, 2015 a meme with that slogan appeared on Facebook and quickly went viral. The truth behind the statement is difficult to prove or disprove because it doesn’t fully identify who is considered a foreign terrorist.  However, in 2015 there were 21 people who were shot and killed by toddlers. 13 toddlers inadvertently killed themselves, 18 injured themselves, 10 injured others and 2 killed someone else.

Have a wonderful day!
