Yoga May Have a Positive Impact on Depression

WedSept20CI.jpgIN YOUR DAILY DOSE: you’ll discover a simple form of exercise that may have more effect on treating depression than drugs.

MAKING CHANGES: Exercise has long been recommended for people with depression as it improves hormonal balance and brain function. However, it turns out the form of exercise you choose may have a significant impact as well.

FACT OR FICTION: The big pineapple!

In The News

Nearly 2 percent of the population suffers from a form of depression lasting two or more years. This is a significant number of people, or nearly 6 million people. While exercise will improve blood flow and increase “feel good” hormones in the body, researchers have also determined the deep breathing exercises linked with yoga also have a significant impact on reduction of symptoms.

Up to 40 percent of people treated with antidepressant medications don’t experience a full remission of symptoms. In this study nearly everyone who participated in twice weekly yoga classes and home program experienced a significant reduction in symptoms. Researchers found those who attended three classes a week had a greater reduction.

Daily Health Tip

Yoga is a healthy addition to your exercise routine, whether you are depressed or not. It increases flexibility, blood flow, deep breathing and can also be a cardiovascular program.

Making Changes

Exercise reduces stress, helps you sleep, improves cardiac function and burns calories. Yoga improves flexibility, reduces depression and the benefits already mentioned. It’s a relatively easy practice to start in either a beginner yoga class or using DVDs.

Start slowly and stay consistent - you WILL experience the results!

Daily Affirmation

I can let go of my fears. My mind is strong and able to see beyond a moment of fear. I recognize my talents and pursue my dreams regardless of any fears that may arise.
I can avoid panic because I know I am strong and powerful.
Fact or Fiction?

In Bakewell, Australia Christine McCallum has grown one over 16 pounds. Measuring 12.5 inches and 18 pounds this monster dwarfed normal sized pineapples. Unfortunately the pineapple didn’t produce any off shots so Christine was unable to breed it and reproduce another. The pineapple ended up on their Christmas dinner table that year. Previously, the largest pineapple was 17.06 pounds.

Have a wonderful day!
