FACT OR FICTION: Horses are smarter than you might think!

In The News

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University found that cell death and consumption ( a good thing) works in the brain and intestines to communicate between the GI tract and the brain. The researchers were looking for how this interaction affects the aging process and found that both fasting and smelling food had an influence.

Past research using fruit flies confirmed this hypothesis. When the fruit flies were on a restricted diet, they lived longer lives. However, when allowed to smell food that they didn’t eat, their life expectancy was not as drastically longer as it was without smelling the food.

  1. Fast from dinner until lunch making sure you go over 12 hours between meals.
  2. Fast two days a week for 24 hours.
  3. Combine the two types fasting for 24 hours once a week and between dinner and lunch or lunch and breakfast the remaining days of the week.

Remember to drink enough water that your urine is a light straw color to stay hydrated and eat plenty of healthy saturated fats to fuel your body.

Daily Affirmation

Today, I eat nutritiously even when I go out to eat. I choose meal options that support my good health.
Self-Reflection Questions:
1. How can I avoid temptation while eating out with my family at their favorite restaurant?
2. How can I find a balance between healthy food and occasional treats?
3. What can I do to encourage others to make healthier choices at restaurants?

Fact or Fiction?

Mr. Ed was a palomino horse featured on the television show with the same name. He was portrayed as a bit more intelligent than his owner. But it wasn’t until the book Black Beauty was written and published in 1877 that the plight of the horse was recognized. Horses continue to be treated as little more than slaves, even though they are thought to be as intelligent as the dogs who sleep in their owners beds. They are proficient at learning simple tasks and have the capacity to solve advanced cognitive challenges and some concept formation.

Have a wonderful day!
