Children Can Also Get The Sitting Disease

Jan15SittingCI.jpgIN YOUR DAILY DOSE today you’ll discover exactly what the sitting disease is and why you should help your children avoid it.

IN MAKING CHANGES today there are four simple changes you and your children can make to reduce your risk of health problems.

IN FACT OR FICTION you’ll discover where the first ambulance ride took place.

In The News

The National Institutes of Health released a statement in September 2015 that confirms children experience some of the same benefits of brief and frequent activities that adults do. Today, it’s called the sitting disease, because sitting for more than an hour at a time will increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.

In this statement, the NIH stated that interrupting the usual 6 hours children spend sitting or reclining during the day with brief bouts of walking will reduce insulin resistance and reduce the potential the child will eventually develop diabetes.

“The researchers found that during the interrupted sitting day, the children averaged 7% lower glucose levels and 32% lower insulin levels compared to when they sat for 3 hours continuously. Their blood levels of free fatty acids (high levels of which are linked to type 2 diabetes) were also lower. So were levels of C-peptide, an indicator of how hard the pancreas is working to control blood sugar.”

Daily Health Tip

The same research results have demonstrated the same benefits for adults as well. If you exercise for 30 to 60 minutes a day but then spend 8 hours behind a computer working, you’ll have completely deleted the beneficial effects of exercise. There are things that you and your child can do to reduce the problems and improve your health.

Making Changes

Incorporate these simple changes each day to reduce your risk.

1. Get up at least every 30 minutes to stretch, walk a few steps, or do a few calisthenics by your desk.

2. Every hour walk for about 3-5 minutes. Go to the bathroom, grab a glass of water, stretch, visit a colleague instead of emailing the question.

3. Get your child up every 30 minutes when they are at home. Ask them to get you something, explain the necessity of moving around and help them to remember.

4. Go for a walk each evening with your children to help them increase their activity level and develop good habits.
