Do you enjoy jogging, but have been told you are ruining the cartilage in your legs? In a unique study performed during an ultra-distance running event researchers found that the cartilage in the lower extremities - except for the knee cartilage - would actually regenerate.
Dr. Schultz, lead author, says,
"Interestingly, further testing indicated that ankle and foot cartilage have the ability to regenerate under ongoing endurance running. The ability of cartilage to recover in the presence of loading impact has not been previously shown in humans. In general, we found no distance limit in running for the human joint cartilage in the lower extremities."
At the end of the ultra-marathon the runners in the study had suffered a 6.1 percent reduction in their grey matter. However, after one year that volume had also regenerated. However, while the volume was the same a year later, it wasn’t evident if what regenerated functioned in the same way.

Ultra-marathons are events that go over distances longer than 26 miles. There are some events that go over 100 miles. While physicians are sure that cardiovascular activity each day will improve your health, they are equally sure that distances and times of this nature are more detrimental to the heart, knees and body than helpful.
However, there are people who enjoy the long, long distance running and insist on doing it. If you happen to be one of them, it’s important that you protect your body and heart to the best of your ability.
Although it may seem that your body will go on forever, there is a finite number of days that your body will work. The pounding that goes along with long, long distance events is taxing and brutal.
Take a full complement of vitamins to ensure your body has what it requires to repair itself. Take the requisite days off of exercise and take rest days when you experience pain. Discomfort is common during long distance races, pain should not be. Pain is an indication that your body is breaking down or injured. Take heed and rest!
