Does Cartilage Regenerate; Will This Help You?

WedDec7CI.jpgIN YOUR DAILY DOSE today you’ll discover that MRI imaging reveals the cartilage in your ankles and hips can regenerate. However, the cartilage in your knees cannot. So, while long distance running might be what you enjoy, it might be time to think about another long-term plan.

IN FACT OR FICTION you’ll discover exactly what trees in your yard do for your home, and it isn’t just make the yard look nicer.

In The News

Do you enjoy jogging, but have been told you are ruining the cartilage in your legs? In a unique study performed during an ultra-distance running event researchers found that the cartilage in the lower extremities - except for the knee cartilage - would actually regenerate.

Dr. Schultz, lead author, says,

"Interestingly, further testing indicated that ankle and foot cartilage have the ability to regenerate under ongoing endurance running.  The ability of cartilage to recover in the presence of loading impact has not been previously shown in humans. In general, we found no distance limit in running for the human joint cartilage in the lower extremities."

At the end of the ultra-marathon the runners in the study had suffered a 6.1 percent reduction in their grey matter. However, after one year that volume had also regenerated. However, while the volume was the same a year later, it wasn’t evident if what regenerated functioned in the same way.

Daily Health Tip

Ultra-marathons are events that go over distances longer than 26 miles. There are some events that go over 100 miles. While physicians are sure that cardiovascular activity each day will improve your health, they are equally sure that distances and times of this nature are more detrimental to the heart, knees and body than helpful.

Making Changes

However, there are people who enjoy the long, long distance running and insist on doing it. If you happen to be one of them, it’s important that you protect your body and heart to the best of your ability.

Although it may seem that your body will go on forever, there is a finite number of days that your body will work. The pounding that goes along with long, long distance events is taxing and brutal.

Take a full complement of vitamins to ensure your body has what it requires to repair itself. Take the requisite days off of exercise and take rest days when you experience pain.  Discomfort is common during long distance races, pain should not be. Pain is an indication that your body is breaking down or injured. Take heed and rest!

My Daily Affirmation

I gladly give up a few minutes of my time to brighten someone else's day.

In my daily routines, I pause long enough to give someone a smile or ask them about their day. I listen to what they have to say and give encouragement that uplifts or inspires them.

Fact Or Fiction?

Discover what mature trees in your yard will do for your home. Yes, your yard looks better - but it’s more than that!

Trees are beautiful and add real curb appeal to your home. But, did you know that the trees add more than that?  Properly placed around the home or building, they can reduce your air conditioning bills by 30 percent and 20 to 50 percent in energy used for heating.  The effect of a young and healthy tree is equivalent to 10 room-size air conditions. A mature tree will reduce the peak summer temperature in your home by 2 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Think about how much cooler it is to stand under those trees in the hot summer months - they do the same for your home and your heating bills!

Have a wonderful day!
