Do you want to reduce your calories, weight, sugar and cholesterol intake? Would you like to experience better health with just a small change? You can!

Researchers from the University of Illinois evaluated the habits of over 18,000 people and made an interesting discovery.  When adults increased how much they drank plain water by just one percent they reduced the amount of food and calories they ate each day and also decreased the amount of sugar, sodium and cholesterol too!

Those who increased their water intake by one, two or three cups reduced their total calorie intake between 68 and 205 calories per day and their sodium between 78 to 235 grams. Lead author Ruopeng An was quoted in Science Daily, saying, "The impact of plain water intake on diet was similar across race/ethnicity, education and income levels and body weight status. This finding indicates that it might be sufficient to design and deliver universal nutrition interventions and education campaigns that promote plain water consumption in replacement of beverages with calories in diverse population subgroups without profound concerns about message and strategy customization."

Drink more water! Your body is made up mostly of water and your cells need water to stay healthy. Just one percent dehydration can reduce your cognitive abilities and will cause you to feel hungry.



Making Changes

You might find it challenging to drink more plain water each day but there are a couple of things you can do that will make it just a bit easier.

1. If you like cold water, keep some in the refrigerator, if you prefer room temperature then pour a gallon of water in the am and leave it on the counter.

2. Pour the amount of water you want to drink all day into a single container and pour from there. You’ll have a better idea of how much you’ve drunk and how much more you still need to drink.

3. Add a lemon or lime wedge to your water to flavor the water without adding calories or other chemical additives.

4. If you don’t like to sip it, then chug it. It doesn’t matter - just get it in.

5. Purchase a water bottle you can carry during the day or keep at your desk. Having water around will make it easier to drink all day.

Fact Or Fiction?

Camel.jpgWhy do camels have humps on their back? Is it water storage, food stores or insulation? 

Camels are born without the characteristic hump on their back and can run within hours of their birth. They travel together in herd of up to 30 individuals in search of food and water. In Arabia the camels have one hump but in Asia they have two. But, contrary to popular belief those humps don’t store water. Instead they are filled with fatty tissue that store energy and insulate the rest of their bodies from the extreme heat.
