FACT OR FICTION:Avalanches are beautiful, overwhelming and dangerous. Here are a few more facts about these beautiful phenomena of nature.

In The News

In a study published from Virginia Tech researchers found adults 19 years and older who replaced one sugary drink each day with water could reduce their body weight and improve their overall health.

Researchers found that it didn’t matter how many sugary drinks you consume each day, replacing even just one could make a difference in your health.  Drinking sugary drinks increase your risk of obesity, weight gain and type 2 diabetes.

Diet drinks are not a healthier alternative as the non-sugar sweeteners used actually spike your insulin and blood glucose higher than white sugar and increase the risk you’ll eat more.

Daily Health Tip

It’s important to reduce your carbohydrate intake everyday to reduce your risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. You don’t have to be obese to get diabetes, but you’ll likely be eating a diet rich in carbohydrates.

Making Changes

Making changes to reduce your sugary drinks and carbohydrates should be done slowly and methodically to improve your potential for success.

Replace just one sugary drink with water for 3 weeks and then move on to replacing another one. Before you know it you’ll be eating less than 100 grams each day of carbs and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Replace those carbs with healthy fats from non-genetically engineered plant products, like avocados and pastured, organic meats and dairy.

Fact or Fiction?

Avalanches are frightening, overwhelming and deadly.  They happen when a layer of snow collapses and slides downhill. They are caused by one of three things plus a trigger. Either the snow is on a steep slope or there is a weak layer in the snow to cause a slide once triggered. They can be triggered by wind, rain, earthquakes, warming temperatures, skiers, snowmobiles, hikers or vibrations from construction.  Thousands of avalanches occur in Canada each year and more are triggered by rangers to keep their areas safe for people and animals.

Have a wonderful day!
