You Have Neurons That Switch Back and Forth

ThursdayNeuronsCI.jpgIN YOUR DAILY DOSE today you’ll learn that scientists have discovered that neurons in your brain can switch functions. This discovery could lead to better control of neurological conditions, such as epilepsy.

IN MAKING CHANGES are techniques you can use to protect your brain and nervous system from damage.

IN FACT OR FICTION is the only mammal on earth that cannot jump.

In The News

Researchers from the MRC Centre for Developmental Neurobiology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London, have discovered a switch that controls the properties of the neurons in your brain and body which change when they are presented with changes in their neural network.

Basically, this means that some neurons are able to adapt their properties when presented with a problem, like learning a new motor task. The authors were studying two different classes of interneurons, only to discover that they were the same, having the ability to change between two different states.

These particular cells are found in the cerebral cortex and responsible for memory, cognition and learning. By more fully understanding this mechanism, scientists believe that they can better recommendations about educational policy and brain repair after stroke and brain injury leading to better recoveries.

The research demonstrates the incredible plasticity of the brain and how it relates to learning and medicine. A greater understanding of this function could result in better control of epilepsy and other neurological conditions.

Daily Health Tip

We have one brain and one neurological system. While we might be able to live with just ½ a lung, or ½ a kidney or ½ a stomach, we can’t live with ½ a neurological system. It’s important that we learn the strategies to keep our brain and nervous system fully functional and healthy.  There are several techniques you can use daily to protect your brain and your future.

Making Changes

1. Get 8 hours of sleep a night. Research has demonstrated that the brain cleans house while asleep, getting rid of toxins that destroy function. People who get less sleep have a higher risk of suffering from dementia.

2. Drink enough fluid to stay hydrated. This means your urine will be light straw colored. This helps your kidneys to flush toxins from your body.

3. Eat foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, moderate amounts of very dark chocolate, fermented foods and fruits and vegetables.

4. Take a multivitamin and consider other supplements you may need if your diet is low in foods rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin A, E, D3, K2, and C.
