In The News

Researchers from the MRC Centre for Developmental Neurobiology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London, have discovered a switch that controls the properties of the neurons in your brain and body which change when they are presented with changes in their neural network.

Basically, this means that some neurons are able to adapt their properties when presented with a problem, like learning a new motor task. The authors were studying two different classes of interneurons, only to discover that they were the same, having the ability to change between two different states.

These particular cells are found in the cerebral cortex and responsible for memory, cognition and learning. By more fully understanding this mechanism, scientists believe that they can better recommendations about educational policy and brain repair after stroke and brain injury leading to better recoveries.

The research demonstrates the incredible plasticity of the brain and how it relates to learning and medicine. A greater understanding of this function could result in better control of epilepsy and other neurological conditions.
